Michael Roberts joins Good to Great Schools Australia
In June 2017, Michael Roberts joined the Good to Great Schools Australia (GGSA) team as the Executive Director of Schools.
Michael is an inspirational educational leader and highly regarded in the Queensland education community.
Michael guided Broadbeach State School, to become a leading Queensland academic school. Under his stewardship, dramatic school improvement was achieved through a commitment that every child received the opportunity to succeed and excel both in school and beyond the school gate.
Michael’s desire to build the capacity of others is a tremendous asset to GGSA’s mission in supporting schools on their path to excellence. Michael draws on his wealth of experience to share how optimum school improvement can be achieved.
Since starting work with GGSA, Michael has enthusiastically reached out to schools in Queensland and New South Wales, offering information and advice on how partnership with GGSA will assist them on the path of improving school performance.
Michael is also a member of the Minister for Education Simon Birmingham’s expert Panel for the Review to Achieve Educational Excellence in Australian Schools. This panel is colloquially known as Gonski2.
Broadbeach State School success
Broadbeach State School’s academic success was achieved through a strong focus on highly structured English and Mathematics programs featuring Direct Instruction and explicit instruction.
Broadbeach State School was not always an academically outstanding school. Through Michael’s investigation into how the school could improve, he recognised that Direct Instruction and explicit instruction could lift teacher capability and student results.
In a two-year period Broadbeach State School exceeded the performance of other similarly positioned schools, as well as that of many other schools with more advantageous socio-economic conditions.
The school struggled to improve NAPLAN results for many years.
Michael visited high performing schools to observe and analyse their pedagogical approach. As a result, he introduced Direct Instruction in literacy and numeracy into Broadbeach State School.
